At nineteen, Aine discovers she is a selkie and can change into a seal at will. She thought she had a year to decide whether to become a selkie permanently and live with her new-found clan in Ireland, or return home as a human. 
She was wrong. She has five weeks. After making her choice, there is no going back.

Her abusive father, Niles, was banished from his selkie clan twenty years ago for staging a coup and losing. When Aine is welcomed into his old clan, Niles plans on using her to try once more for his coup. 

Niles offers Aine an exchange: help him become the de facto leader and he will give her complete freedom from him and his tyranny of the clan. 

If she refuses his offer, she will become human. Her clan will be safe from him, but she will face a lifetime of loneliness and abuse and a slow descent into madness.

She has to decide who to save from her father: them or her.
